Fascists or Fanatics?

The New York Times reported in “Arab Nations Strike in Libya, Surprising U.S.” that:

“CAIRO — Twice in the last seven days, Egypt and the United Arab Emirates have secretly launched airstrikes against Islamist-allied militias battling for control of Tripoli, Libya, four senior American officials said, in a major escalation of a regional power struggle set off by Arab Spring revolts.”

First, it seems “odd” that Muslim nations like Egypt and the UAE would launch secret attacks into other Muslim nation like Libya. Clearly, any previous façade of Arab unity is disappearing. Muslims may wish to kill Christians and Jews, but first—they want to kill every other Muslim whose faith is different from their own. Civil wars are always the worst.

Is the Economy’s 2nd Quarter Performance Overrated?

Yahoo Finance reports that,

“The latest numbers on GDP growth show an encouraging upturn. After a dismal drop in first quarter output, GDP grew by 4% in the second quarter, which many economists consider a convincing sign that more prosperous times are ahead.

“But, what if the reported 4% growth in the Second Quarter turns out to be 2%?

That “what if” is not unlikely.

Financial Trend Forecaster published an article entitled “How to Destroy Your Economy in One Easy Lesson”.  That article discussed Argentina’s current economic plight and argued that Argentina was following a tried-and-true, Nine-Step-Program, to destroy their own economy.  Most of those Nine Steps are already also being implemented in the U.S..

The following headings are from Financial Trend Forecaster.  The subsequent comments are my own.

1) “Promise the poor ‘Bread and Circuses’.”

I.e., bribe the non-productive poor to reelect incumbent politicians by providing benefits, grants and entitlements to the great unwashed that are unearned.  Convince the non-productive elements of society that they are “entitled” to receive “benefits” which they have not personally earned.

Argument [courtesy Google Images]

[courtesy Google Images]

Although most arguments seem emotional, classical argument is an element of logic.  Logic is an element of philosophy.  At bottom, arguments are (or should be) rational.

Who’d’ve guessed, hmm?

There are several varieties of argument.  However, in it’s most basic form, argument consists of:

1) Major premise;

2) Minor premise; and,

3) Conclusion.

The classical formula for argument is probably:   If A = B, then C.  In this example, “A” could be the Minor Premise, “B” could be the Major Premise, and “C” could be the Conclusion.  IF the minor premise “A” is equal to the major premise “B,” then the conclusion “C” must be true.  If minor premise “A” and major premise “B” are not equal, then the conclusion “C” must be false.

The “argument” takes place over whether minor premise “A” and major premise “B” are, in fact, equal.

I close each of the two hours on my Tuesday night radio show, American Independence Hour, with the song Danny Boy.  That version of the song is haunting.  But the singer’s not well known, so a number of listeners have written to me to ask Who sang that song?

It was Eva Cassidy.

Here’s her story as portrayed by Nightline. Her story’s not about law. It’s not about economics or politics.  But her story is about life–and it’s worth your time

Ferguson Mo Conspiracy Theory

Here’s a Black resident of Ferguson, Missouri, who claims that the federal government has imported phoney protesters into Ferguson to fan the flames and help precipitate more violence by demonstrators and more counter-violence by the police and National Guard.

If this conspiracy theory is correct, more of Ferguson and perhaps parts of St. Louis are likely to be burned to ashes in the near future–and not because of the locals.  On the other hand, if the conspiracy theory is false and evidence of overreaction, we may see some semblance of lasting calm restored to Ferguson within the next week.

I don’t know if this conspiracy theory is true or false.  But we live in a time when it could be true that our own government–despite claims to be searching for a solution to the conflict in Ferguson–is actually seeking make matters worse, more violent, more deadly and more widespread. How much longer can Ferguson burn before we also see fires in Chicago, Atlanta, Baltimore or LA?
