Mencken’s Prophecy

I received an email containing the following:

H.L. Mencken (A.D. 1880 – A.D. 1956) was a journalist, satirist, critic and registered Democrat.

Mencken reportedly wrote an editorial that appeared in the July 26 , A.D. 1920 edition of the Baltimore Evening Sun.  In that editorial Mencken observed and predicted that:

“As democracy is perfected, the office of the President represents, more and more closely, the inner soul of the people. . . . On some great and glorious day, the plain folks of the land will reach their heart’s desire at last and the White House will be occupied by a downright fool and complete narcissistic moron.”

.

Apparently, Mencken was more than a talented satirist–he was also a gifted prophet.

    Mencken’s Creed

I believe that religion, generally speaking, has been a curse to mankind, that its modest and greatly overestimated services on the ethical side have been more than overcome by the damage it has done to clear and honest thinking.

I believe that no discovery of fact, however trivial, can be wholly useless to the race, and that no trumpeting of falsehood, however virtuous in intent, can be anything but vicious.

I believe that all government is evil, in that all government must necessarily make war upon liberty.

I believe that the evidence for immortality is no better than the evidence of witches, and deserves no more respect.

I believe in the complete freedom of thought and speech.

I believe in the capacity of man to conquer his world, and to find out what it is made of, and how it is run.

I believe in the reality of progress.

I believe that it is better to tell the truth than to lie. I believe that it is better to be free than to be a slave. And I believe that it is better to know than be ignorant.

    – Cited by George Seldes in Great Thoughts

Roger, here’s two more by Mencken:

“The one permanent emotion of the inferior man is fear – fear of the unknown, the complex, the inexplicable. What he wants above everything else is safety.”

“Democracy is only a dream: it should be put in the same category as Arcadia, Santa Claus, and Heaven.”

I could comment but a national emergency was declared on April 1st directed at internet pirates and anything I might write might be construed as a malicious cyber-enabled activity.

@pesky nat “ANYTHING YOU SAY CAN BE & WILL BE HELD AGAINST YOU”

Generally those who actually say things on the internet are radio hosts or their call in’s while a majority of internet activity involves writin’s rather than sayin’s. I am going to make a huge leap here and suggest that the new national emergency against internet miscreants withholds benefit of clergy from them.

And because all bold and irreverent Speeches touching matters of high nature, and all malicious and false Reports tending to Sedition, or to the Amusement of Our People, are punishable … (etc.) [Charles II, Proclamation of Oct. 26, 1688]

palani, that seems to be a good thing to do because generally those who actually say things on the internet are radio hosts but the main reason it is the proper thing to do is, You (a man) are simply a ‘thing’ unless you claim some property which elevates you to the position or office of ‘person’.
